On December 6, 2010, the Young Trade Unionists held their regular scheduled general meeting, but this meeting was a little different. This was the meeting that they celebrated their one year anniversary in existence and their proud accomplishments in their one year. They were joined by guest speaker Secretary Treasurer Liz Shuler, Delegate Elect Mary Washington, Radio Host Marc Steiner, and a profound list of Presidents and Business Managers(Business Manager Joe Shanahan/ Operating Engineers Local 37, President Rod Easter/ Baltimore Building Trades, President Ernie Grecco/ Metro Baltimore AFL-CIO, President Marietta English/ Baltimore Teachers Union, President Elizabeth Brown/ Seafarer’s International Union, President Thomasine Derricks/ APWU Local 181, President Mike Smith/ NALC Oriole Branch 176, Business Manager Richard Carter/ Local 307) from across the State of Maryland. We would also like to thank Professor Bill Barry for his never ending fight to educate young people about the labor movement and his donation of great books to help educate about the labor movement. During the meeting there was a ceremony to swear in the new officers of the Young Trade Unionists to continue the progress of the young worker movement. Guest speaker AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Liz Shuler also did a remarkable job talking about the importance of growing the young worker movement, the failed attempt to pass the extension of unemployment benefits, and the importance of growing the middle class through the labor movement. This was another great victory for the Young Trade Unionists and we were proud to share it with so many friends that believe in the education of the labor movement! By Cory V. McCray |
